ADULTS
I can support adults in a variety of cases:
SUSPECTED AUTISM / ADHD:
I provide compassionate support to adults who suspect they may have autism or ADHD traits but have not received a formal diagnosis. It’s not uncommon for adults to recognise similar traits in themselves after their children have been diagnosed with autism or ADHD. Additionally, many adults may question their childhood experiences and behaviours in light of what is now known and discussed about neurodevelopmental conditions. Neurodevelopmental conditions can be dynamic and may change throughout one’s life, leading to new insights and understandings over time. Furthermore, the concept of ‘masking,’ where individuals with autism or ADHD may consciously or unconsciously hide or suppress their neurodivergent traits to fit in with societal norms, can complicate self-awareness and recognition of one’s own traits. Through empathetic listening and a strengths-based approach, I work collaboratively with adults to explore their experiences, challenges, and strengths. By offering psychoeducation about autism and ADHD, as well as providing guidance on self-assessment tools and resources, I help individuals gain a deeper understanding of their unique neurodiversity. Together, we can explore strategies for managing daily life, improving relationships, and enhancing overall well-being. Whether seeking clarity about their neurodivergent traits or support in navigating their journey towards a formal diagnosis, I am here to provide guidance, validation, and empowerment every step of the way.
DIAGNOSED CONDITIONS – POST-DIAGNOSTIC SUPPORT:
After receiving a diagnosis of autism or ADHD, adults may benefit from ongoing support to navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with their neurodiversity. Receiving a diagnosis is always challenging as it might redefine one’s identity and perceptions of oneself. As a clinical psychologist, I offer post-diagnostic support tailored to the individual needs and goals of each adult. This may include psychoeducation about their diagnosis, helping them understand their strengths and challenges, and exploring strategies for managing daily life and relationships. I provide a safe and non-judgmental space for adults to discuss their experiences, emotions, and concerns related to their diagnosis. Additionally, I offer guidance on self-advocacy, helping individuals communicate their needs effectively and access appropriate accommodations and support services in various settings, such as the workplace or educational institutions. Through collaborative goal-setting and ongoing therapeutic support, I empower adults to embrace their neurodiversity, build resilience, and thrive in all aspects of their lives.
CHILDHOOD TRAUMA:
I offer compassionate support to adults who have experienced trauma during childhood, whether they are struggling with lingering memories and emotions or seeking to explore their trauma to enhance their parenting skills. Childhood trauma can have profound and lasting effects on an individual’s emotional well-being and relationships, and it’s not uncommon for adults to find themselves still grappling with the impact of past experiences. As a clinical psychologist, I provide a safe and supportive environment for adults to process their trauma, explore its effects on their lives, and develop coping strategies to manage symptoms such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties. Through evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as trauma-focused cognitive-behavioural therapy (TF-CBT), mindfulness-based interventions, and narrative-based approaches, I help adults reclaim their sense of agency and empowerment. Whether they wish to address specific trauma-related symptoms or gain insights into how their past experiences may be influencing their parenting, I work collaboratively with clients to support their healing journey and foster resilience.
PARENTING SKILLS:
I am committed to supporting parents in fostering positive communication and relationships with their children, equipping them with the tools and strategies to be effective and nurturing caregivers. Whether navigating the challenges of single parenting, adoption, fostering, or simply seeking to enhance their parenting skills, I offer a safe and non-judgmental space for parents to explore their experiences, concerns, and goals. I have extensive experience working with parents who have engaged in interracial adoption, supporting them in navigating unique challenges related to race, attachment, communication, and identity development. Through collaborative discussions and evidence-based interventions, I help parents gain insight into their own patterns of responses, especially in stressful situations, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. I provide guidance on effective communication techniques, setting appropriate boundaries, and promoting positive discipline strategies that foster mutual respect and understanding between parents and children. Additionally, I offer support in managing transitions, building attachment in adoptive or foster families, and navigating co-parenting dynamics. I also acknowledge that parents may unconsciously replicate dynamics from their own upbringing, which can influence their parenting styles and interactions with their children. Therefore, I assist parents in exploring and addressing these dynamics to promote healthier family dynamics and relationships. My goal is to empower parents to create a nurturing and supportive environment where their children can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.
